Those in fraternities. When I was an undergraduate, I noticed theĀ misguided actions associated with fraternity men and their relationship to alcohol. That is, an excessive relationship.
Craft beer began to flourish in the Midwest. I fell in love. The artistry, forethought, and experimentation of beer gave it a story. And I love to hear stories. Especially those which involve a community of people, serving their neighbors. Something fresh. Something rad. Local beer.
I was convinced that beer was inherently awesome. Yet, young adults were consuming irresponsibly. I wanted to do something. So I set to action, little by little, a plan to impart responsibility unto those fraternity members.
Let's have a beer tasting! There is a timeless proclivity towards alcohol consumption in the community. Instead of taking a negative liberty approach, that being, enforce or prohibit consumption, I thought to encourage temperate, comprehensive consumption.
I took the initiative to draft a craft beer drinking guide. This anticipated that many individuals would feel alienated from the experience if they did not meet a small-talk threshold of beer jabber.
Successive years have passed since that first beer tasting. I have learned that a 20 page document is not the most enticing literature, especially if the user knows they will get to drink beer, regardless of their knowledge. As a reboot, I challenged myself to create a simple, visually-pleasing, and informative introduction to beer.
Below is a slideshow with the entirety of the beginner's beer drinking guide given to my alma mater fraternity. Developing the artwork was a challenge for me. It's entirety is a labor of love - for that of others and of beer. It is best enjoyed with a local pint!
